The EPM is a magnetic-inductive flow meter (electromagnetic flow meter) designed for the precise measurement of the volumetric flow rate of electrically conductive liquids. It is suitable for a wide range of industrial applications and can be used for clean liquids as well as contaminated or solids-containing media. By selecting suitable liner and electrode materials, the magnetic-inductive flow meter can be adapted to different process media and operating conditions.

Magnetic-Inductive Flow Measurement Based on Faraday's Law of Induction

The measuring principle of the EPM is based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. Inside the flow sensor, a magnetic field is generated perpendicular to the direction of flow of the electrically conductive medium. As the liquid moves through this magnetic field, an electrical voltage is induced. Two measuring electrodes detect this voltage, which is proportional to the average flow velocity of the medium. The volumetric flow rate is calculated from the measured flow velocity and the known cross-sectional area of the measuring tube.

A sufficient electrical conductivity of the process medium is required for magnetic-inductive flow measurement. This measuring principle is therefore particularly suitable for water, aqueous solutions, numerous chemicals and other electrically conductive process liquids.

A major advantage of a magnetic-inductive flow meter is that there are no moving mechanical components inside the measuring tube. The process medium can flow through the unrestricted pipe cross-section without additional internal components obstructing the flow path. As a result, the flow meter causes virtually no additional pressure loss. At the same time, the simple measuring principle reduces mechanical wear and enables reliable, low-maintenance flow measurement.

Flexible Adaptation to Process Media and Applications

Different process media place different demands on the materials used in a flow meter. The EPM can therefore be configured with various liner and electrode materials. The appropriate selection depends, among other factors, on the chemical properties of the process medium and the respective operating conditions.

These configuration options allow the EPM to be used for a broad range of electrically conductive liquids – from water and process water to chemically demanding, contaminated or solids-containing media.

The EPM is available in both compact and remote versions. In the compact version, the flow sensor and transmitter form a single compact unit. The remote version allows the sensor and transmitter to be installed separately. This enables the flow meter to be adapted to different installation and environmental conditions.

Applications

The EPM magnetic-inductive flow meter is designed for the measurement of electrically conductive liquids in a wide range of process and industrial applications. The measuring principle is particularly suitable wherever reliable flow measurement without moving parts or additional components inside the flow cross-section is required.

Water and Wastewater

Magnetic-inductive flow meters are an established measuring technology for flow measurement in water and wastewater applications. The EPM can be used to measure water, process water and other electrically conductive aqueous media. As there are no moving parts protruding into the flow cross-section, the measuring principle is also suitable for contaminated liquids and media containing solids.

Typical measuring applications can be found in water treatment, water supply, wastewater treatment and industrial water and process circuits.

Chemical and Process Industries

In the chemical and process industries, flow meters must handle a wide variety of process media. By selecting suitable liner and electrode materials, the EPM can be adapted to the properties of the respective medium.

The magnetic-inductive flow meter is therefore suitable for numerous electrically conductive chemicals, solutions and other process liquids. The specific material selection is made according to the required chemical resistance to the process medium and the prevailing operating conditions.

Solids-Containing and Contaminated Media

Because the EPM operates according to the magnetic-inductive measuring principle and has no moving mechanical measuring elements protruding into the pipe cross-section, it can also be used for light contaminated and solids-containing electrically conductive liquids.

Industrial Process and Utility Systems

In addition to water and chemical applications, the EPM is suitable for numerous industrial processes in which the volumetric flow rate of electrically conductive liquids needs to be measured or monitored. Potential applications include plant and mechanical engineering, energy and utility systems, as well as various areas of the process industry.

The availability of compact and remote installation versions allows the EPM to be adapted to the spatial and environmental requirements of the respective measuring point.

Special Features

Compact and Remote Versions

The EPM is available as a compact or remote version.

In the compact version, the transmitter is mounted directly on the flow sensor. This compact design is suitable for measuring points where the sensor, display and electronics can be located directly at the same installation point.

In the remote version, the flow sensor and transmitter are installed separately. The sensor and transmitter are each equipped with a terminal box. The transmitter is supplied with a mounting bracket for wall installation.

The remote version provides advantages where the display and controls would be difficult to access at the actual measuring point or where environmental conditions make it beneficial to install the sensor and transmitter separately.

Flexible Transmitter Orientation

With the compact version, the position of the transmitter can be adjusted to suit the installation conditions. The corresponding locking screws are loosened and the transmitter can then be rotated into the required position.

This makes it possible to adjust the orientation of the display to the local installation conditions and improve readability.

The maximum permissible rotation is 270°. Rotation beyond this limit must be avoided, as it may damage the internal wiring between the sensor and transmitter.

IP67 Protection and Optional IP68 Version

The EPM is supplied with IP67 protection as standard. This provides protection for operation under typical industrial environmental conditions.

For measuring points with increased requirements for protection of the sensor against water ingress, an optional IP68 version is available. In this version, the connection cable is connected to the sensor before delivery. The electrical connection on the sensor side is subsequently permanently potted.

This design provides permanent protection of the sensor connection against water ingress. The IP68 option is therefore particularly suitable for applications in which the sensor is exposed to increased moisture or water, subject to the specified operating conditions of the respective version.

Integrated Grounding Electrode

Reliable magnetic-inductive flow measurement requires a defined electrical reference potential between the process medium and the measuring device. For this purpose, the EPM is equipped with an integrated grounding electrode.

Depending on the piping, process medium and installation conditions, additional measures for potential equalization may be required. The appropriate grounding arrangement for the respective application depends on the installation conditions and the requirements specified in the operating instructions.

Adaptation to Different Process Media

The materials in contact with the process medium are essential for the reliable and long-term operation of a magnetic-inductive flow meter. The EPM is therefore available with different liner and electrode materials.

The appropriate combination is selected according to the process medium and operating conditions. This allows the EPM to be configured for a wide range of electrically conductive liquids and industrial applications.
